Old Chatham: Documentary on a man transforming racial stereotypes in his town - "A Man Named Pearl"

Date : 1 February 2010       From : 7:00pm   To : 9:00pm    iCal
Category : Race Issues Location : 12136

Event Description :
"A Man Named Pearl" (2006, dirs Scott Galloway and Brent Pierson, 78 mins, http://AManNamedPearl.com/ )

The film follows the journey of Pearl Fryar, a black sharecropper's son, who has risen to prominence as an internationally acclaimed topiary (flower garden) artist, and in the process transformed his community. In the poorest county in South Carolina, and amidst initial fears by neighbors that "a black man woundn't keep up his yard", Pearl single-handedly created an 3-1/2 acre garden from throwaway plants. His efforts have brought hope and racial reconciliation to his hometown. "With decades' worth of stunning, lush topiaries, his garden is now a tourist destination, and he's an uplifting icon in his community."

"In this life you're gonna have obstacles. The thing about it is, don't let those obstacles determine where you go." --Pearl Fryar
