DESCRIPTION:A Transition Network meeting held on the third Tuesday of each

hat seek sustainable living methods at the government\, business\, and cit

sustainability groups from Albany\, Rensselaer\, Schenectady\, and Sarato
ga Counties. This may include organizations like CSA farms\, bicycle advo
cacy groups\, community gardens\; in order to pool resources and transitio

The Capital District already has many groups like CSA farms\, bicycle advo
cacy groups\, community gardens\, etc.\, that are working on important pie

DESCRIPTION:'The New Jim Crow: Lecture Series and Community Read on Issues
of Race and Imprisonment in the United States.'\n\nThis part of the discus
sion series is called 'Arresting the New Jim Crow: Taking Action Here'\, b
 y Manna-Jo Green\, Community Advocate\, Jobs Not Jails\; and Ann Perry\, P
oughkeepsie Common Councilwoman\, 5th Ward.\n\nThe discussion series is ar
ound the issues brought-up in Michelle Alexander's controversial 2010 book
'The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness'. The
group will meet every other week on Wednesday evenings from March 14 to M
ay 23.\n\nThe book is a New York Times bestseller about the mass incarcera
tion rates of African Americans in the contemporary United States. An ext
ensive outline of the book is available at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Th
e_New_Jim_Crow\n\nThe sessions will feature opening lectures from local an
d regional authorities and activists\, including college professors and fo
rmer inmates of New York State prisons. Each opening lecture will offer a
n overview and background information targeted to a specific chapter from
the book. The brief lecture is then followed by an open discussion on bot
h the book chapter and lecture. 'It's really like a large book club\,' sa
id Odell Winfield\, curator of the Sadie Peterson Delaney African Roots Li
brary\, and one of the organizers of the series. \n\nBackground from the o
rganizers: The United States has the highest incarceration rate in the wor
ld. Beginning in the 1970s\, the number of Americans residing in jails ha
s risen more than 500% to total 2.2 million people. Though African Americ
ans make up a little more than 12% of the total U.S. population\, nearly h
alf of those behind bars\, or roughly 900\,000 inmates\, are black. These
statistics mean that African Americans are nearly six times as likely to b
e incarcerated as whites. The racial disparity also encompasses Hispanics
\, who are twice as likely to be sent to jail as whites. \n\nIn Dutchess
County\, the statistics are even more alarming. Though African Americans
constitute just 10% of the population\, 52% of all those sentenced in Dutc
hess County are African American. Another 11% are other minorities\; just
37% are white\, even though whites make up 80% of the county population.
\n\nWith her training as a legal scholar and civil rights attorney\, Miche
lle Alexander calls this phenomenon 'The New Jim Crow' because of the way
it parallels the former laws that once discriminated against African Ameri
cans. According to Ms. Alexander\, 'once you're labeled a felon\, the old
forms of discrimination - employment discrimination\, housing discriminat
ion\, denial of the right to vote\, denial of educational opportunity\, de
nial of food stamps and other public benefits\, and exclusion from jury se
rviceare suddenly legal. As a criminal\, you have scarcely more rights
\, and arguably less respect\, than a black man living in Alabama at the h
eight of Jim Crow. We have not ended racial caste in America\; we have mer
ely redesigned it.'Cost: Free.\n\nLocation:\nSadie Peterson Delaney Africa
